New research indicates that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users using such drugs must be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Users who have discontinued the medication report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something flipping and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
