No fewer than 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight injured in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The official announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in national works. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled persistent concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an immediate halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in full compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and operation of these strategic projects.
